Harriet's Story

Harriet joined the highways, transportation & infrastructure team in 2019 as an Associate Consultant, before being quickly progressing. In 2023 she became a Lead Consultant and joined our Leadership Development Programme.

What motivates you to get up in the morning?

I am lucky enough to be surrounded by people who motivate me daily. I look at what everyone around me is achieving at Carrington West and I am grateful for the fact I have found myself a career within an extremely successful company which offers great progression.

What is your favourite thing about working for Carrington West?

The people I work with. Carrington West is like one big family, we all work together. I love the buzzy atmosphere in the office and the fact that when things are tough everyone is so supportive of each other.

What has been the highlight of your time at Carrington West?

Being promoted. I started off at Carrington West as an Associate Consultant, learning the market and supporting the consultants in my team. Since then I have built up strong relationships with clients and had some successful job fills.

What has been your biggest challenge at work so far?

Understanding and being able to explain IR35 has been a big challenge, as it is so important to be able to support candidates and clients through the upcoming changes. As a recruiter you need to know about the industry you work in and you have to be an expert on anything related to hiring. Luckily we also have a great compliance team to support us.

What would your advice be to anyone starting their career at Carrington West?

Take it all in but most importantly - ask questions. It's normal to feel overwhelmed when you’re new. However, you are learning from the best and Carrington West offers amazing training. Never be embarrassed to ask the questions/things to be explained again as there is so much to learn.

Now you are a Lead Consultant, how has your day-to-day changed?

I wouldn’t say my day-to-day has changed that much, however now I am a Lead Consultant, I make it my priority to ensure I am setting the right examples over the desk daily. I am also now involved in management meetings and training sessions which is enabling me to support my Team Leader on a stronger level.

Is there any advice you could give to a new Associate?

I would say to ask loads of questions, jump in on all the training provided and observe the consultants around you and learn from them.  I also feel at the start of your career it’s important to keep your motivation and activity levels high as you will only benefit from this in the long run.

Where do you want to go from here?

My next goal is to be in Carrington West’s top 10 billers and hopefully in the future, as the public sector regions team develops, become a Team Leader.

Tell us one thing about yourself your colleagues don’t know!

I have a four-leaf clover tattooed on my ankle for luck!
